You don't understand the beauty of American Ballfrog. It is a Postmodernist commentary on the capitalist state of America. Gary Ball is trapped in a fourth stage sign; his reality presents itself as the truth while being the farthest thing from it. We can see the so called "glitch in the matrix" when Brian's phone clips through the ground and comes out the other end. The other Postmodernist elements include parody and pastiche. It is quite obviously a parody of American Psycho, borrowing the same name and general set design, but the pastiche is where it truly shines. Instead of Gary becoming a murderer, he simply hates his life, acting more akin to a Family Guy cutaway gag, like you said. This "pastiche," or rather, pasting together of genres, attributes to the beauty that makes this a shining example of Postmodern work.
